Never too late to learn music

It's one of the questions we hear most: "Am I too old to start?" The short answer is no. At TWA, teens, parents and retirees learn side by side, and some of our most committed players picked up their instruments as adults.

A skill for every stage of life

It's never too early or too late to start. Music grows with you through the years, whether you're learning your first notes or coming back to an instrument you played at school.

Keeps your mind active

Reading music, listening and playing together keep you learning something new every week. Research also links playing music in later life with sharper memory and an active mind.

Hands, breath and posture

Fingering notes and keeping time exercise fine motor skills and coordination. Wind playing encourages deep, steady breathing and good upright posture.

Time to unwind, with friends

A regular break from work, studies and daily routines: time that's just for you. In a band, you play side by side with musicians of all ages, and regular rehearsals bring friendship, purpose and a lift in mood.

Fitting lessons around work

Adults bring patience, focus and a clear idea of the music they love. What most of us lack is time, so the trick is a routine that fits your week. 1-to-1 lessons can be booked weekly, fortnightly, or more often before a performance, so a busy month doesn't mean falling behind. If you'd rather play with others, the Band Experience rehearses on alternate Saturday afternoons, 2–4 pm.

Coming back after school band

If you played in a secondary school band, a lot comes back faster than you'd expect. Many returning players join the main band after a free consultation, and pick up where they left off.

We go at your pace

There's no need to worry about being slow. There are no exams unless you want them, and for a stress-free first stage, our instructors can play alongside you at concerts.

Where to start

  • Book a trial lesson to try the instrument and meet a teacher
  • Rent an instrument for your first three months in the Beginner Band
  • Go at your own pace: there are no exams unless you want them

Find your instrument and see what you'd learn at your level, or see the Band Experience.
